A veteran Conservative MP has broken ranks to call on the King to offer Sir Ed Davey’s now-vacant seat at the Donald Trump state banquet to Nigel Farage. Andrew Rosindell, who represents Romford in Essex, issued the call in support of the Reform UK leader after Sir Ed’s astonishing statement on Wednesday evening.
The Lib Dem leader was condemned for “pathetic gesture politics” after he said he would boycott the top diplomatic gathering in the name of Gaza. Sir Ed said that after lengthy deliberation and praying, snubbing His Majesty’s invitation “is the one way I can send a message to Donald Trump and Keir Starmer that they can't close their eyes and wish [the situation in Gaza] away. We have to speak up, they have to act. Donald Trump has to end this humanitarian crisis”.

Mr Rosindell said Sir Ed’s empty seat should be handed to Mr Farage, who despite leading in the opinion polls has not received an invitation.
He said on X: “I don't think President Donald Trump will have even heard of Sir Ed Davey, so I doubt he'll lose much sleep over Sir Ed's petty and foolish decision to boycott the state banquet in honour of the president, hosted by His Majesty The King.
“Now there is a space for an opposition party leader to attend, I can think of a good one who could be invited to occupy the empty chair at Windsor Castle … @Nigel_Farage.”

The guest list for top state occasions, such as Mr Trump’s visit, is co-ordinated by Buckingham Palace.
It is likely Sir Ed received an invitation over Mr Farage due to their respective parties’ representation in the Commons.
While Reform UK has a handsome lead in the opinion polls, the Lib Dems have 72 MPs, compared to Reform’s five. It means Reform also misses out on other benefits, including party funding and representation on Commons select committees.

Sir Ed Davey’s announcement was condemned by shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel as “appalling”.
She blasted: “This an act of deep disrespect to His Majesty the King. It shows appalling judgement.
