TOKYO -- A hole has opened up on a road in a downtown part of the Kichijoji neighborhood in the Tokyo suburban city of Musashino on Nov. 2, causing the rear of a garbage truck to fall into it.

At around 5:50 a.m. on Nov. 2, the garbage truck's driver called police and told them a road in the Kichijoji neighborhood had caved in and that his vehicle was stuck. The Metropolitan Police Department's Musashino Police Station said that as of 7:15 a.m., the road on the north side of the Tokyu Department Store's Kichijoji branch had a hole measuring about 3 meters wide, 5 meters long, and 4 to 5 meters deep, and that the garbage truck's rear wheels were caught in it. There were no reports of injuries.

According to the Musashino Municipal Government's road management division, the road in question is managed by the city. It also said there were two men in the garbage truck. It has been reported that the hole has widened from its initial size.

The road is a one-way street in a downtown area about 250 meters northwest of JR Kichijoji Station, and right beside a building construction site. The construction firm said they were too busy to speak to the Mainichi Shimbun.

The 56-year-old owner of a yakitori grilled chicken skewer restaurant located along the street said, "I was home at the time, but I found out about the hole when a neighbor called me and said there's been a problem on the road in front of my restaurant.

"A lot of people, children and adults, pass through the road, so it's terrible something like this has happened. I don't think we'll be able to do business for a while. I was told by the company (at the construction site) that they were going to drain water that had accumulated at the building site."

A 24-year-old woman working at a nearby cafe said, "Police officers were just putting up a cordon when I came to work at 7 a.m. Construction work is going on next to the site, so I wonder if it's related. I'm scared at the thought of getting caught up in it (the accident)."
