Furious free speech advocate hits out at ‘shadowy hard-left activists’ countering GB News

General Secretary of the Free Speech Union Toby Young said Stop Funding Hate (SFH) had “falsely” claimed the new channel was “a platform for toxic, far-Right views”. In an article for the Mail on Sunday, Mr Young branded activist group SFH a “censorious, anti-democratic organisation”.

He added that the Free Speech Union was calling on the companies that were persuaded to withdraw their advertising from the channel to “reconsider” the move.

Mr Young wrote: “If they don't want to advertise on GB News, that is their right, but they should base that decision on an informed understanding of what the channel is all about and not on misinformation being disseminated by a shadowy, hard-Left organisation with a covert political agenda.

“Needless to say, SFH started smearing GB News as an outlet for hatred and prejudice long before it had broadcast a single programme.”

He added: “Moreover, nothing on GB News has been remotely racist or misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, or anything else.

“Like the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky News, the channel is regulated by Ofcom, which has strict rules against broadcasting any content that spreads hatred against minorities.”

Despite widespread boycott during the first week of broadcast, GB News saw some of the firms that had pulled advertising reverse the move.

Former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage said: "We saw a number of companies being bullied online by these extreme activists.

"Those companies saying, 'oh, dear, we're going to have to withdraw from advertising for GB News.'
