Following her victory, Suella Braverman has aimed a dig at Rishi Sunak, intensifying the beginnings of a Tory civil war.
In her speech after winning the Fareham and Waterlooville seat, the former home secretary twice said she was sorry and said the country “deserves better”.
Ms Braverman said: “I’m sorry that my party didn’t listen to you. (The) Conservative Party has let you down. You – the Great British people voted for us over 14 years and we did not keep our promises.
“We’ve acted as if we’re entitled to your vote regardless of what we did, regardless of what we didn’t do, despite promising time after time that we would do those things and we need to learn our lesson because if we don’t, bad as tonight has been for my party, we’ll have many worse nights to come.
“The country deserves better and we’ve got to do better and I will do everything in my power to rebuild trust. We need to listen to you – you have spoken to us very clearly.”

Ahead of her victory, Ms Braverman and other Tories were torn into by Sir Robert Buckland who lost his seat in South Swindon earlier in the evening.
Launching the civil war, Sir Robert criticised the state of the Conservative Party and what it had become. He said: “I’m fed up with performance art politics.
“I’ve watched colleagues in the Conservative Party strike poses, write inflammatory op-eds and say stupid things they know have no evidence for instead of getting on with the job”.
“I’ve had enough of it. I want the Conservative Party to get back to the ethos of doing stuff well, of being competent, not pretending to please the media.”

Sir Robert added: “If we can get back to that I think we have more than a fighting chance at the next election, but we need to do it quickly and we need to wake up now.”
Sir Robert also attacked what he called the “ill-discipline” within the Tory party and said he expected more from colleagues.
He explained: “I think we’ve seen in this election astonishing ill-discipline within the party. To see articles written before a vote is cast in the general election about the party heading for defeat and what the prognosis should be is spectacularly unprofessional and ill-disciplined, that’s not the Conservative Party I joined… I expect more from colleagues.

“I also expect more from colleagues in senior office to get a grip of their brief and portfolio and also understand politics is about hard choices, it’s about doing the detail.”
Following what is expected to be a landslide victory, there are questions over whether Rishi Sunak will continue to lead the Tory party if he keeps his seat in Richmond.
