       Lee Anderson clashed with the BBC's Nick Robinson in a punchy Radio 4 Today interview after the local elections.

       The Reform UK MP insisted the insurgent party is "here to stay" and claimed it would be music to the ears of Mr Robinson and the "Gary Linekers of the BBC" if it did not stand.

       He was responding to the BBC host saying that Reform had "clearly" damaged the Conservatives by taking votes from them.

       The Ashfield MP said: "I know the Reform party not standing in these areas would be music to your ears and the Gary Linekers of the BBC.

       "But look we're here to stay, we're making inroads, we're a small party, we were polling 3-5% last year now we're polling around the 15% mark.

       The interview got off to a tetchy start when Mr Anderson took exception to Mr Robinson saying he had "defected" to Reform UK.

       The former Tory deputy chairman joined Richard Tice's party after losing the Conservative whip for refusing to apologise for claiming London Mayor Sadiq Khan was controlled by Islamists.

       Mr Anderson said: "I didn't defect, let's get that right, you're wrong again.

       "I was an independent MP when I joined the Reform party so please, if you're going to conduct this interview professionally let's get the facts right."

       As Mr Robinson protested, Mr Anderson went on: "I didn't defect, listen, stop being so ridiculous. I was an independent MP and I joined the Reform party. I didn't defect from one party to another. That's cleared that up, that's cleared that nonsense up straight away."

       Elsewhere during the interview, the Red Wall MP challenged Mr Robinson to run for Parliament when the host said it would be "bizarre" for Nigel Farage not to make a fresh bid to become an MP.

       "Have you spoken to Nigel Farage, Nick? Why don't you run for Parliament?" asked Mr Anderson.

       In an apparent swipe at GB News, Mr Robinson replied: "I'm asking the question to you. There are other channels on which politicians interview each other and interview themselves, this isn't one of them.

       "So let's stick with the convention where I ask you questions and you at least make an effort to answer them."

       Giving his verdict on the local election results, Mr Anderson pointed out that Reform UK beat the Conservatives in 16 of the 25 seats up for grabs in Sunderland and came third place just behind the Tories in the Blackpool South by-election.

       He said: "It was a good night for Labour, let's be honest. It was a very poor night for the Conservative Party, especially in the Brexit-type areas.

       "We got nearly 17% of the vote share in Blackpool, which I think is tremendous, that's above our polling nationally.

       "Up and down the country we did well. In Sunderland we beat the Tories in 16 out of 25 seats there."
