Daily Express columnist Carole Malone gave a scathing verdict on the Labour Government with one brutal sentence on the Jeremy Vine Show. She appeared on the Channel 5 programme and argued that no foreign national should be able to claim benefits because the public is sick of immigration. Speaking to Matt Allwright, Carole described the country as a "tinderbox" and said in one line that people are "sick to death of this Government and the previous one - and their attitude to immigration and doing nothing about it." She also said in a savage swipe: "Britain cannot be treated as a charity for the rest of the world."

It comes after it was reported yesterday that more than 1.2 million foreigners are receiving Universal Credit. Figures published by the Department for Work and Pensions reveal that 118,749 refugees are receiving the benefit, and at least 770,379 EU citizens and family members.

211,090 individuals with indefinite leave to remain in the UK who are not part of the EU resettlement scheme also claim the benefit. 54,156 individuals living in the UK on humanitarian grounds, including people from Ukraine and Afghanistan, also receive it.

Many people reacted to Carole's argument, with several agreeing with her. One person said: "She’s right. It would be less attractive to live in a place where there weren’t benefits. The entire system should be overhauled."

A second also said on X: "Carole Malone is brilliant. She speaks common sense for the majority of the public." A third also chimed in: "Well said Carole! Spot on as always! You should be working and paying taxes for 5 to 10 yrs before being allowed any benefits. 5 being the very least in extreme circumstances."

Foreigners claiming universal credit has reached a surprising total (Image: Getty)

Once they are granted either indefinite leave to remain or refugee status, foreign nationals become eligible for Universal Credit and other benefits on the same terms as British citizens.

It is the first time that details of the immigration status of individuals receiving Universal Credit have been published, and the figures have now sparked calls for non-UK citizens to be barred from claiming the benefit.
