Hospital A&E departments ‘overwhelmed’ by children with mild winter viruses

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) warned that emergency rooms across the country were seeing record numbers of young patients who did not present severe symptoms. Experts called on parents to only resort to A&E wards when their children are “seriously unwell”.

Dr Camilla Kingdon, president of the RCPCH, explained that fevers were often a common symptom in young children.

She told BBC News: "Most of these children are fine and have returned home once their parents were reassured.

"We need to make sure that services are available for children who are seriously unwell."

Dr Damian Roland, a Leicester paediatrician, told the news outlet that he had tended to nearly 300 people in one day in his emergency ward.

He said: "You just see hour after hour more and more patients arrive, and we simply don't have enough staff to keep up with that demand.

"We feel like we're at our capacity and winter hasn't even begun yet."

The RCPCH analysed figures and the experiences of paediatricians in A&E across the country.

The study showed that children going to the emergency department are mostly under the age of five.

However, these patients do not have Covid-19.
