EU would accept independent Scotland 'within 10 seconds as Brexit revenge' – dire forecast

Mr Varoufakis said that the EU would accept Scotland as a member state "within seconds" because the "EU elites look on Brexit as a major defeat, and therefore they will seize the opportunity to take their revenge". He added: "They seek to take their revenge on Boris Johnson and the Tory Party by bringing Scotland in. There is no doubt about that."

He explained that before the Brexit referendum Scottish voters feared Spain would "veto an independent Scotland in the EU", making many refrain from voting for independence.

He added that in a post-Brexit environment, that fear has diminished.

He said: "But then we had the Brexit referendum that took the UK out of the EU and Scotland out of the EU against its will."

The former Greek finance minister added that Spain will not seek to veto Scottish independence, due to the "Catalan Question" because "the chancellor of Germany and president of France will twist the arm of whoever is the leader of Spain to accept".

In an interview with the New Statesman, Mr Varoufakis added that in reference to an independent Scotland "the SNP is not courageous enough to explain what they will do with their own currency if they become independent".

He added: "It is preposterous for them to say what they will do with the pound.

"If you want to have independence proclaim your own monetary independence.

"All they have to do is sever the link of the Scottish pound to the English pound.

"But that takes courage that the SNP are not showing at the moment."

The former Greek finance minister said that Scottish independence was still "a huge problem for Britain and for England in that matter, as well as for Scotland".

He added: "The Scots need to ask themselves some very pressing questions.

"What we see are the negative repercussions of the incomplete devolution of Tony Blair.

"The problem was that England was not given a certain amount of autonomy, no such identity, and no such way of expressing itself.

"If I was a Scottish person I would vote in favour of independence.

"This is because England has gone too far in favour of Thatcherism."

Scotland joining the bloc would mean Edinburgh joining the single market and customs union.

This would result in an Anglo-Scottish border that would become a new external customs and regulatory frontier for the EU.

It would also further isolate Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK.
