Dramatic photos show the car inside the woman's rubble-strewn home and the front of a vehicle smashed in after the crash in the Westhoughton area of Bolton. Neighbour Jean Partington described hearing "two terrific bangs".

She said: "I thought it was a bomb. It was that loud.

"I went to the window and couldn't see anything because it was dark. I could hear a voice crying out so rang the police."

Officers were called at about 5.15am on Sunday and along with firefighters and paramedics rushed to the pensioner's bungalow.

The woman was taken to hospital with "serious leg injuries".

Police have since described her as being in a "serious but stable condition".

The horror smash happened at the approach to a mini-roundabout at the Chew Moor Lane junction with Bolton Road.

After crashing through railings outside the woman's home, the BMW smashed through her front window.

In a Facebook post, the woman's granddaughter revealed she had been in bed when the car "came through into her lounge".

She added: "The impact was so severe that the internal walls collapsed on her whilst she was in bed."

The BMW was removed by a recovery truck from inside the house on Sunday afternoon.

Bricks could be seen throughout the inside of the bungalow with a number of possessions and items of furniture badly damaged.

Mario Akinyemi, who lives in Bolton Road, said he was woken up by "the lights and noise" at the scene.

He added: "I saw the car had gone through the window.

"It looked pretty awful. The whole car was through the wall."

Fellow neighbour, Beth Robertson, told the Manchester Evening News she felt shocked to see police cars and a cordon in the street.

She said: "It’s not what you expect to wake up to on a Sunday morning.

"My heart goes out to the woman. I hope she’s going to be okay."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to Bolton Road, Westhoughton, just after 5.15am on Sunday to reports that a car had collided with a house.

He added: "A 92-year-old woman was inside the property at the time and suffered serious leg injuries.

"She was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

"A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and assault.

"He also received hospital treatment for a head injury."

Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service also attended the incident.
