Jonathan Ashworth was left squirming on TalkRADIO after Julia Hartley-Brewer attempted to pin down the Labour Party frontbencher on mask-wearing. Ms Hartley-Brewer grilled the Shadow Health Secretary over why he did not wear a mask during Labour's conference in Brighton in September. Mr Ashworth maintained mask-wearing had not been needed as party organisers had checked vaccine passports, however, the TalkRADIO host insisted such checks were ditched before the end of the conference.

       Ms Hartley Brewer asked the Labour MP: "Why did you not wear a mask at party conference?

       Mr Ashworth replied: "Because at party conference, we actually use the vaccine passport.

       "Actually, no," interrupted the host.

       "I think you'll find that you know, you're allowed to show lateral flow test, no one was required to show anything after Sunday.

       "And by the Wednesday I'm not entirely sure that means that people are COVID clear if they've had a negative lateral flow test on Sunday."

       Mr Ashworth began: "Well, we were asking people to show that...."

       Ms Hartley Brewer jumped in again: "No one was asked to show anything after Sunday.

       "I was there and I got the email from the Labour Party saying that they would not be asking to show anything after Sunday.

       "That's a lie, it's nonsense."

       The Shadow Health Secretary responded: "Well, we...I certainly remember sharing my status on whatever I'd had a vaccine."

       "On Sunday," pressed the host.

       He said: "Well, yeah, but that's why people I mean, people use that we use that to get into the event."

       Ms Hartley-Brewer added: "So it's absolutely fine for no one to wear masks at all at Labour Party conference, karaoke parties, and things.

       "But we absolutely have to wear them in crowded places everywhere else, apart from Labour Party conference?

       "Well because we'd ask people who had signed up that they'd had a negative lateral flow.

       "Or they'd had a vaccine," defended Ms Ashworth.
