GEORGE TOWN: The Bayan Baru Market reopened on Tuesday (Sept 14) after a 14-day closure when 11 of its traders, assistants and public health assistant tested positive for Covid-19.
In a statement by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), it said the market was allowed to reopen.
"The public market will operate again according to the SOP by the National Security Council (NSC) and the Health Ministry.
"The public is reminded to adhere to all the SOPs to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bayan Baru Market Traders Association chairman Tan Ken Keong said the traders returned to clean up and sanitise their stalls to prepare for a full reopening on Wednesday (Sept 15).
"Over 100 stalls are reopening and only traders who are all clear are returning.
"Those who are close contacts or with symptoms will not return to operate until they get clearance from the Health Ministry.
The market was earlier closed on Aug 31 involving 159 stalls within the market area but food hawkers at an adjacent complex were not affected.
