       A man was fatally shot Monday afternoon in the parking lot of a shopping center in Northeast, according to a D.C. police spokeswoman.

       The shooting occurred about 1:40 p.m. in the 1600 block of Maryland Avenue NE. It is near Starburst Plaza, named for a confluence of major streets that meet at that location, including H Street, Benning Road and Maryland and Florida avenues.

       Police had initially reported that the victim was conscious when he was taken to a hospital. A department spokeswoman said the man later died. No arrests have been made, and the victim’s identity was not immediately released.

       Authorities said they were looking for a man in his 20s who ran with a gun across the parking lot toward a pharmacy across the street.
