Keir Starmer is the new Prime Minister of the UK after Labour won Thursday's General Election by a landslide, but a number of prominent Tories retained their seats - including favourites to replace Sunak as leader.

Various Cabinet ministers were swept away in the Labour wave, including major leadership contender Penny Mourdant, who lost out to Keir Starmer's party in Portsmouth North, where her 15,000+ majority was overturned.

But Kemi Badenoch, another figure widely tipped to be Sunak's successor, held firm in North West Essex - despite seeing her 2019 majority of 27,594 cut to just 2,610.

Another darling of the Tory right, Suella Braverman, also retained her seat in Fareham and Waterlooville. The former home secretary had been fighting for re-election in the new constituency in Hampshire after changes to parliamentary boundaries.

Jeremy Hunt also clung onto his seat in Godalming and Ash despite a tough challenge from Lib Dem rival Paul Follows.

       However, Hunt won with a razor-thin 800-seat majority after a knife-edge vote.

The Chancellor's result came at the same time as outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak retained his Richmond (Yorkshire) seat, during which the PM conceded defeat to Labour.

Sunak said the British people had "delivered a sobering verdict" and that he took “responsibility” for his party’s loss.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps also became one of the biggest Tory casualties of the national vote after a strong challenge from Labour.

Mr Shapps blamed the "endless political soap opera" and Conservative in-fighting for Labour's victory, warning it has put voters off.
