Chancellor Rachel Reeves has axed winter fuel payments for around 10 million pensioners (Image: GETTY)
As the energy regulator, Ofgem, announced another rise in the energy price cap to £1,717, government must address how older people can keep themselves warm and well this winter.
I commend Labour for driving its energy sprint, replacing oil and gas with cheaper renewables, but such transition will not save people from crushing prices this winter.

Last year, cost of living payments and community warm spaces, supported through the Housing Support Fund, carried us through the coldest months. This year, they’re not there. With 4,950 excess deaths due to cold homes last year, I fear the impact on older people.
The decision to switch the heating on, or not, could leave homes cold and damp. As we age, it’s harder to retain heat, creating the conditions for respiratory infections and hyperthermia to prey on frailty. Keeping warm is a public health measure.
The Government’s UK Health Security Agency recommends homes maintain 18C, yet prices result in people wrapping up in jumpers and duvets. This cannot be right when oil and gas giants are raking in £10bns in profit. A social tariff must be levied from this.

Encouraged by Labour’s focus to increase pension credit uptake among the entitled 880,000 non-claimants, I fear that these efforts alone will not bridge the gap.
This week, the Social Fund Winter Fuel Payment Regulations 2024 were laid without scrutiny from the Social Security Advisory Committee, as is custom.

Parliament has had no time to debate measures to end the universal provision of winter fuel payments worth £200, or £300 for the over 80s. The cost of these regulations could far outstrip their intended £1.4bn in savings.
I urge government to pause and focus on protecting older people this winter.
