Half of lorry 'completely ripped off' after smashing into bridge– police rush to shut road

The incident took place on Villers Street at around 6pm today in the town in Wales. The lorry seemed to be too big to fit under the bridge and, in turn, became wedged underneath it.

The contents from inside the lorry fell out due to the crash and were littered all over the road.

It is not yet known if anyone is hurt.

According to photos, the height of the bridge which the lorry was wedged under is 2.3 metres (8ft).

       The road is currently closed.

Eyewitness Sarah White was there to see the incident taking place.

She said: "I started to drive down Villiers Street as I turned off the main road (Neath Road)and could see the police car with the blue lights, thought nothing of it.

"As I got closer saw a lot of debris, looked ahead and saw the back half of the lorry completely ripped off.

"It was edged under the bridge.

"Even if there wasn’t a sign above you can clearly tell the bridge is too low for a lorry to pass through."

The bridge is located at the end of Villers Street.

At the top of this street, the A474 can be found.

After the bridge, the road leads to Church Street, where there are a number of residential houses.

A spokesperson for Transport for Wales said: “For safety reasons, following a Lorry hitting Wildmill Lane Bridge earlier today, our trains are currently passing the bridge with caution, which is adding minor delays onto journey times."

It is said that the delays caused by this incident will be 10 minutes.

South Wales Police have been contacted for comment on the matter.
