GEORGE TOWN: A woman who tried to help an injured motorcyclist was killed – along with the victim – when an oncoming car crashed into them.
Suhaila Zainal Abidin, 45, and motorcyclist Faizal Abu Bakar, 33, were hit by the car in Jalan Tun Dr Awang, Bayan Lepas, at 11.15pm on Saturday.
Another female pedestrian, who was also trying to help, suffered serious injuries.
Eyewitness Abdul Rahman Naina, 58, said he cheated death after dodging the oncoming car.
He said the two women – both pedestrians – had gone over to help the motorcyclist who had fallen off his machine.
Abdul Rahman, who was driving home then, said he pulled over to give a helping hand.
“Shortly after, a car could be seen coming by and I tried to signal to the driver to slow down. He applied his emergency brake but it was to no avail... the car crashed into the group.”
I managed to run to safety. The next thing I knew, the motorcyclist was sprawled on the ground while another woman was flung some 5m away from the accident scene.
“Another woman was seen grimacing in pain. She had leg injuries,” he said.
The 25-year-old car driver also sustained serious injuries.
Other onlookers helped to remove the driver from the car which had turned turtle.
Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Helmirizal Che Morad said the station received a distress call at 11.26pm.
“We came to the scene, only to find that the public had already removed the driver from his car.
“He and another woman had serious injuries and were sent to the Penang Hospital. The motorcyclist and woman were pronounced dead at the scene,” he said.
