Keir Starmer has secured another record poll lead over the Conservatives this morning, as YouGov finds Labour is now a whopping 30 points ahead of Rishi Sunak.

The new poll gives Labour its biggest lead over the Tories since Liz Truss was Prime Minister, as Sir Keir's party surges to nearly one in two voters saying they will vote for him at the election.

YouGov finds 48 percent now back Labour, up four points on its last poll.

Meanwhile the Tories stay flat on just 18 percent support. Labour's boost comes from supporters of minor parties, with the LibDems down one percent, Reform down two percent and the Greens down one percent.

Labour hasn't seen such a huge lead since October 2022, the week of Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng's mini budget.

Labour's lead in today's poll would leave the Conservative Party with just 13 MPs, namely: Helen Grant, Rebecca Harris, David Reed, Joy Morrissey, Sir John Whittingdale, John Hayes, Mike Wood, Alister Jack, David Mundell, John Lamont, David Duguid, Harriet Cross and Andrew Bowie.

The poll also sees voters ignoring Mr Sunak's warnings that Britain is heading for a hung parliament, with just 14 percent agreeing with the PM's forecast.

By contrast, 66 percent of those polled say they expect a Labour majority, compared to just five percent predicting a Tory majority.

The poll is yet another blow to the beleaguered Prime Minister, who in the last 24 hours has seen yet another of his MPs defect to Labour and the former Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi join the 65-strong exodus of Conservative MPs.

Despite the mega poll lead, Sir Keir has a major headache of his own this morning as yesterday’s defection of right-wing Tory MP Natalie Elphicke has split his party in half.

Members of his own shadow cabinet are now briefing against him, with some Labour MPs reportedly in tears yesterday when they heard the news.

One shadow cabinet minister said: “People are upset and angry right across the party about the decision.”

Another shadow minister told the Guardian: “Logically or politically, we didn’t need this … I worry that they’ll not have done sufficient due diligence on her.”

They added: “Her hard-right views are a big red line too. Are we welcoming Nigel Farage next week?”

There are also concerns about Labour’s vetting of their new MP, given the prominent role Ms Elphicke played in defending her ex-MP husband Charlie Elphicke both during and after he was jailed for sexual assault.

She was also temporarily suspended from the Commons, along with other Tory MPs, for trying to put pressure on the judge during Mr Elphicke’s trial.

Even after their marriage ended, Ms Elphicke defended her ex-husband, writing: “Charlie is charming, wealthy, charismatic and successful – attractive, and attracted to, women”.

Last night, The Times reported that Labour’s chief whip, Sir Alan Campbell, expressed concerns about the potential fallout of accepting her as a Labour MP, -although he did not advise against her being admitted to the party.

Neil Kinnock, the former Labour leader, also warned: “I think we have got to be choosy to a degree about who we allow to join our party because it’s a very broad church but… there are limits”.

“Ms Elphicke has got to decide whether she is committed to the programme and principles of the Labour Party.”
