(Kane County Sheriffs Office / HANDOUT)
Kane County Sheriff’s Office investigators used surveillance video and witness information to locate an Elgin man they say was involved in a hit-and-run crash in which a motorcyclist was seriously injured in St. Charles Township, near South Elgin.
Ruben Campuzano, 47, of the 500 block of Harrison Street, has been charged with felony counts of aggravated reckless driving, failure to report an injury accident and driving while license suspended in connection with the Sept. 13 crash at Route 25 and Gilberts Street.
Campuzano was reportedly driving his SUV at a high rate of speed when he struck the 72-year-old motorcyclist, who was stopped at the intersection, according to the sheriff’s office report. The suspect then fled the scene, the report said.
The motorcyclist was taken to an Elgin hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators obtained surveillance video from a nearby business and provided it and information on the crash to local media and on social media. A witness came forward with information that led them to Campuzano, the sheriff’s office said.
Campuzano has admitted to striking the motorcyclist and not stopping because he did not have a valid driver’s license, investigators said.
He is being held in the Kane County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 29, jail records show.
