The Belgian Royal Palace announced on Friday the royal injured herself, but did not have to be hospitalised. The princess will recover at home and is currently resting.
During a press release the palace said the injury occurred during “a sports activity in the private sphere”.
Following the surprising injury, the royal has suspended all of her duties until her recovery is complete.
Astrid had a scheduled trip to the US at the beginning of October as the King was also recently forced to cancel all upcoming events, but this may have to be postponed.
The princess was supposed to be travelling to the States from October 2 to 9.

During the visit Astrid planned to visit New York city, Boston and Atlanta.
The visit was centred around highlighting medical technologies and pharmaceuticals, artificial intelligence, the farm and food sector and climate change solutions.
This comes as King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium were forced to cancel their upcoming engagements as someone in the family tested positive for Covid.
The royals have limited their contact with people after a member of the Royal Family contracted the virus.

The King and Queen tested negative, but will remain in isolation, the Palace announced last week.
It is unknown which member of the family has tested positive, though royal officials have said it was a “younger” member.
A younger member of the Belgian Royal Family announced at the end of August that she will be attending a British university this autumn.
Princess Elizabeth, 19, has revealed that she will begin her studies at the University of Oxford in October.
Next in line to the Belgian throne, the princess announced she will be studying History and Politics.
