A 24-year-old woman was fatally struck by a car Saturday afternoon while crossing the street at Columbia Road and Biltmore Street NW in the Adams Morgan area, D.C. police said.

       Police identified the woman as Nina Larson, of New Canaan, Conn. Her mother, Matilde Larson, said she had a “beautiful spirit” and loved to sing, wanting one day to be an opera singer.

       “She brought beauty to the world .？.？. she had so much promise,” Matilde Larson said. “And she was cut down in broad daylight in a crosswalk. I want to know what happened.”

       Nina Larson was crossing the street in the 1800 block of Columbia Road NW, from north to south, about 3:30 p.m., when an Infiniti EX35 traveling west in the same block crossed over to Biltmore Street NW and struck her, according to an initial investigation, police said.

       Larson was trapped under the vehicle, police said, until D.C. Fire and EMS personnel treated her and transported her to a hospital.

       She died of her injuries, police said.

       Nina Larson began singing when she was 4 years old, taking part in church choirs and a high school musical theater program, Matilde Larson said. She “discovered the joy” of classical music while studying voice at American University, from which she had recently graduated, Matilde Larson said. She was working at Mintwood Place, a bistro in the 1800 block of Columbia Road, said her brother, Peter “PJ” Larson, while she also trained with a vocal coach to pursue her dream of being a professional opera singer.

       Mintwood Place announced Saturday in a statement on its website that the restaurant would be closed for the remainder of the weekend.

       “Due to the tragic loss of one of our team members, Mintwood Place will be closed tonight 11.13 and tomorrow 11.14. We apologize for the inconvenience,” the statement said.

       Matilde Larson said the family is seeking accountability and “a full investigation.”

       “This was not an accident. This was someone making the choice to drive recklessly, and they killed my beautiful girl,” Matilde Larson said.
