PETALING JAYA: Two-time Paralympic champion Abdul Latif Romly and former national diver Leong Mun Yee have been conferred with Datuk titles.
The two athletes were bestowed with the Panglima Mahkota Wilayah medal, which carry the title Datuk, in conjunction with this year’s Federal Territories Day.
They join former shuttler Lee Chong Wei, cyclist Azizulhasni Awang and diver Pandelela Leong in getting Datuk titles for their sporting achievements.
The 24-year-old Abdul Latif is one of the nation’s top para athletes and has excelled on the world stage in recent years.
Abdul Latif broke the world record three times en route to winning the men’s T20 (learning disability) long jump title at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics in 2016.
The Perlis-born athlete retained his men’s T20 long jump title at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.
Mun Yee is currently the only Malaysian athlete to compete in five Olympics (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Tokyo 2020).
Mun Yee made her last competitive dive at the Tokyo Games 2020 and is currently assisting coach Li Rui to handle the national diving team.
