TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Japanese government has decided to provide relief supplies to Haiti where a 7.2-magnitude earthquake on Saturday killed some 1,300 people and injured around 5,700, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.

Plastic sheets, sleeping mats and other supplies will be shipped from the Japan International Cooperation Agency's warehouse in the U.S. city of Miami based on a request from the Haitian government, the ministry said.

At the time of the 2010 Haiti quake, which claimed more than 310,000 lives, the Japanese government dispatched a team of medical experts as well as Self-Defense Forces troops as part of a United Nations' peacekeeping operation.
