SIBU: An unemployed man has led police here on a 45-minute car chase on Friday (June 25) night.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said a police MPV was patrolling along Jalan Ling Kai Cheng at 11.25pm when they spotted a car being driven in a suspicious manner.

"They switched on the siren to signal the suspect to stop, but instead he zoomed towards Kpg Bahagia Jaya. The team had also used the car's loud speaker to order the suspect to stop, but he did not," he said.

He said that the team was forced to call for reinforcements and this led to two MPVs chasing the car.

"The driver was getting more aggressive and was driving dangerously. In the haste to escape, he had even entered the opposite lane at Jalan Kpg Bahagia towards Jalan Pahlawan," said ACP Ringgit.

He added that the driver turned down a dead-end road and was apprehended there.

"At the dead-end, the police arrested the suspect who was then very aggressive," said ACP Ringgit, adding that the suspect was handcuffed and sent to the Sibu Hospital for a Covid-19 test which came back negative.

He said the suspect was issued a RM 4,000 compound notice for violating the movement control order's standard operating procedures and is now being remanded for investigation under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing civil servants from discharging their duties.

An 11-second video clip of the chase has since gone viral on social media, and has so far attracted 1.500 views and 1,200 shares.
