1624897143 Flames at Elephant and Castle fire were ‘significant’ - fire official

James Ryan from London Fire Brigade has said the flames at the scene in Elephant and Castle were “significant”.

“Going to 15 pump fires isn’t uncommon for us but this was a high-profile incident in the fact that it was in a very visible location and the size of the flames coming out and the smoke were quite significant. It did attract more attention than the other fires we go to,” the station commander for Shoreditch said.

People are being asked to avoid the area over the next two hours and residents should keep their windows and doors closed for the time being until the fire is fully extinguished, he added.

Speaking to our reporter May Bulman at the scene in Elephant and Castle, the 56-year-old said he had been in an online meeting when he first spotted the smoke.

He told The Independent: “At first I thought it was dust from a demolition of the shopping centre, and then the cloud went really black and I could smell the smoke, I could taste it, so I thought I’d better get out. It was quite apocalyptic.”

1624892819 ‘Fire raged within literally 10 seconds’, says engineer working near scene of Elephant and Castle blaze

Mohsin Khan, 30, an engineer who was working next door to the garages where the fire broke out, told The Independent how the inferno engulfed the garage “within literally 10 seconds”.

Speaking to report May Bulman at the scene in Elephant and Castle, he said: “I was having a cigarette outside and an admin from our site had noticed there was black smoke coming out of a pipe. We saw it coming out the vent, black smoke.

“We notified the garage and within literally 10 seconds, the fire had raged and we started seeing the walls push out.

“We all crossed the road and as we were standing there an explosion happened. A big fire explosion, a lot of heat, everyone was cordoned even further back.”

Mr Khan said there had been two or three people inside the garage, all of whom had evacuated before the explosion happened, six or seven minutes after the fire had started.

“One explosion happened and there were a few more. There were cars parked outside the garage, so I believe they would have exploded as well.”

“Continuously you would hear little bangs,” he added. “The garage fire spread to three shops next to it and taken out the majority of what was on the pavement.”
