A 17-year-old boy is expected to appear before a Cook County judge Sunday in connection to a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a seventh grader earlier this month in the city’s Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The teen, whose name wasn’t immediately released, faces a first-degree murder charge in the June 2 death of Savanah Quintero, 14, in the 1700 block of West 48th Street, according to Chicago police.
Police said the teen was arrested Saturday evening in the city’s West Elsdon neighborhood after he was identified as the gunman who fired the shot that killed the seventh grader.
He is scheduled to appear before a judge during a 12:30 p.m. bail hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
According to authorities, Quintero was walking with a friend on 48th Street when about three people described as teenagers wearing all black clothing asked if she and her friend were affiliated with a gang in the neighborhood. A witness said one person took out a handgun and fired shots.
Quintero initially was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, and she died three days later.
