The storm, called Shaheen, forced thousands to evacuate in Oman as it arrived on Sunday carrying strong winds between 120 and 150 km/h (75-93 mph). Thousands of people living in coastal areas in Oman have evacuated as the capital Muscat flooded.

The category 1 cyclone brought in waves of up to 10 metres (32 feet).

Even before reaching land in Oman, three people including a child had died due to the flooding.

State news Times of Oman reported that a child drowned in the floodwaters brought in by Shaheen.

In Oman, two workers were killed when a hill collapsed on their housing area in the capital of Muscat, the state news agency reported.

The collapse caused several others to be stuck in the rubble.

In Iran, six people were killed in a port in Sistan-Baluchestan, a south-eastern province, according to local authorities.

Just east of the capital, in al-Qurm, the national emergency committee has announced the power supply would be cut to avoid accidents.

More than 2,700 people have been put up in emergency shelters.

Officials in the country have encouraged thousands to evacuate coastal areas and flights in and out of the capital have been suspended.

Residents in Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates, bordering Oman, have been instructed to work from home on Monday.

People have been warned to avoid leaving their homes with the exception of emergencies.

Shaheen was downgraded to a tropical storm once it hit land, according to a local meteorology service.

Cyclones steadily lose their power once they stop travelling over waters.
