TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan will extend $3.25 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Haiti after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit the Caribbean country last month, leaving more than 2,200 dead and over 12,000 others injured, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

The aid, to be provided through the U.N. World Food Program, the U.N. Children's Fund and other international relief agencies, is expected to help supplies of food, water and sanitation to Haiti, severely damaged by the Aug. 14 temblor.

"About 650,000 people are in need of assistance," Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told a press conference.

The United Nations has launched an appeal to the international community to contribute $187.3 million. It said the quake affected some 800,000 Haitians and more than 130,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.
