PETALING JAYA: Taylor’s University is the top ranked Malaysian higher education institution (HEI) in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.

For the fifth year in a row, Taylor’s is the country’s highest ranked university.

At 16th spot for Hospitality and Leisure Management, it stands alongside renowned institutions in the hospitality sector such as Ecole ?telière de Lausanne, Switzerland, University of Nevada Las Vegas, the United States, as well as Swiss Hotel Management School, Switzerland.

Taylor’s also broke into the Top 100 in the world to rank 97th for Business and Management Studies, making it the top private business school in Malaysia and South-East Asia.

“Our constantly evolving pedagogical approaches and curriculum is evidence that the varsity is forward-looking,” said Taylor’s University vice-chancellor and president Prof Michael Driscoll.

“The rankings is an assurance that our faculties are creating an impact, both in academia and in the industry, through our purpose-driven learning and research,” he added.

The second highest ranked local HEI is UCSI University, making an impressive jump up 26 spots to sit at 19th place with its Performing Arts programme.

Universiti Teknologi Petronas is the third highest ranked local HEI in Petroleum Engineering at number 22.

Universiti Malaya (UM) is the country’s highest ranked public university and the most represented HEI in the rankings.

Three of its subjects – Library and Information Management, Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies and Electrical and Electronic Engineering – ranked at number 28, 40 and 50 respectively in the Top 50.

UM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Hamdi Abd Syukor described the rise in ranking as a testament to the quality of the university’s talents, output and outcome.

“It also indicates that the strategic plan put in place and our massive transformation plan has generated positive results,” he said, adding that UM would continue to strengthen its research activities, especially those that have a big impact on the country and the world.

UM, he said, envisions itself as a global university impacting the world.

“International collaborations are a core strategy to achieve this. Our presence in a few strategic world-class university alliances will push the agenda of collaboration further,” he said.

A total of 37 local HEIs are in the Top 100 subjects list, an increase from last year’s 31.

The sectors with the most Malaysian HEIs ranked are Business and Management, Computer Science and Information Systems, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

According to QS Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the Malaysian higher education sector continues to gain ground globally.

QS research director Ben Sowter said: “Over the last five years, key stakeholders in Malaysian higher education have worked hard to improve its universities’ international visibility and cross-border collaborations.

“However, to continue improving in our rankings and sustain their global reputation, it is imperative to ensure high-quality Malaysian research is submitted to reputable journals, which will have much stronger, enduring positive effects on the sector’s outcomes.”

The ranking is compiled by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds and provides an independent comparative analysis on the performance of 15,200 individual university programmes at 1,543 universities in 88 locations in the world, across 51 academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas.

This edition of the rankings includes five broad faculty areas – Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.
