Labour has destroyed important documents that would have shone a much-needed light on where Angela Rayner claimed to be living when she applied to be a parliamentary candidate, it has been claimed.
The revelation comes two days after the party refused to publish the documents, amid the ongoing row and police investigation into the deputy leader.

The Ashton-under-Lyne MP insists her former council house on Vicarage Road in Stockport was her principal residence between 2007 and 2015.
She was registered at the property for five years after she married Mark Rayner in 2010, while he was listed at another address about a mile away in Lowndes Lane.
But neighbours have disputed claims that the couple lived separately.

Ms Rayner is also facing questions over whether she should have paid capital gains tax when she sold her ex-council house for a ￡48,500 profit amid confusion over whether it was her main residence.
The deputy leader was selected as Labour’s candidate in Ashton-Under-Lyne in 2014, and during the application Ms Rayner would have had to declare where she was living.
This afternoon the Telegraph reports that Labour has destroyed the documents.
A Labour spokesman has said the papers were “disposed of” in line with data protection laws, closing down another possible avenue for clarification about Ms Rayner’s living situation.
If Ms Rayner had listed her husband’s Lowndes Lane address on the application, it would have raised further questions about her claim she was living at Vicarage Road.

On Tuesday the row about the Labour deputy exploded as it emerged Greater Manchester Police are in fact probing multiple allegations.
Until Tuesday, it was thought that Greater Manchester Police were merely looking into whether Ms Rayner broke electoral law with a false declaration about where she was living on the electoral register.
However The Times reported that at least a dozen officers are probing a number of allegations, not just electoral law breaches.

They said the officers are examining tax matters and “other issues on top of” the questions about her electoral role registration.
