La Palma evacuation warning as 'unstoppable' red-hot lava river to unleash hell 'in hours'

An "unstoppable" river of molten rock from the volcano is heading towards La Palma's coast. The volcano, which began erupting on September 19, has already destroyed more than 1,900 buildings. However, experts predict more chaos and destruction is on the way, with explosions of lava and toxic gas.

The forecast activity indicates further evacuations across the Canary island are "very likely".

The Canary Islands Volcano Institute (Involcan) published a video today showing a stream of lava oozing along the ground.

Involcan said: "At 10:45 Canarian time lava flows keep moving unstoppable ay the LP-2 over the remnants of the industrial park access."

Since the eruption began, the Cumbre Vieja volcano has destroyed some 1,956 buildings and left at least 60 in a state of partial damage.

More than 6,000 people have already been evacuated from the disaster zone, with some 500 sheltering in two hotels.

The red-hot lava flows have also destroyed crops, wiping out fields of banana, vine and avocado.

Involcan spokesman David Calvo said on Tuesday the volcano's second stream of lava will likely hit the ocean later this afternoon.

The expert characterised the ongoing eruption as "very strong".

A large amount of lava was seen seeping from the volcano last night, which accelerated the speed of its second flow.

Earlier on Tuesday, the flow was seen 98ft (30m) from the cliffs of Tazacorte, on the island's west coast.

The expert predicts the dangerous development will lead to more evacuation.

Based on recent emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2), the volcano has shown no signs of slowing down.

Levels recorded on Monday indicated Cumbre Vieja was belching out some 10,000 tons of the toxic gas.

As long as the emissions are above 400 tons, the eruption will still be considered active.

On top of the emissions, the volcano has been spewing plumes of smoke and ash up to 13,120ft (4,000m) high.

Local officials said on Monday the situation is being closely monitored, particularly in terms of further evacuations.

Weather conditions have exacerbated the situation and the residents of the El Paso municipality were encouraged to stay home.

Parts of the island have been left without access to electricity due to the lava flows bringing down power lines.

La Palma airport has also been plagued with delays as flights were grounded to avoid the ash clouds.

Rescuers have also made preparations to rescue dogs trapped in the inferno.

If the plans are approved, the poor mutts will be rescued using baskets attached to drones.
