An unnamed Welsh teenager, who was on holiday in Ibiza, was bitten by a poisonous spider found on the island.

The hand where he had been bitten featured an ulceration on the palm and several necrotic fingers.

Initially, the 19-year-old tourist was referred to the Sant Antoni private clinic where doctors administered antibiotics and corticosteroids to prevent infection from spreading further. At this stage, several fingers had already become gangrenous.

As his condition did not improve after 24 hours from the initial bite, the patient was referred to Can Misses Hospital with his hand appearing increasingly swollen and purple.

Upon arrival at the hospital emergency room, doctors ruled out saving his fingers and instead fought to save his hand and stop the infection from spreading further.

It is believed the teen was bitten while watching the sunset with friends in San Antonio.

The victim could not identify the spider that had bitten him, so doctors had to rely on the symptoms and clinic report in order to identify the arachnid responsible for the damage.

Using this information, doctors came to the conclusion that the Mediterranean recluse spider, latin name of Loxosceles rufescens, was responsible.

The Mediterranean recluse spider is now found worldwide, but originated from the Mediterranean region and is known for the dangerous effects its bite can cause.

The spider is often found in rocky and humid places, such as caves, where the teenager who suffered the injury had previously visited.

The incident marks only the fifth similar case on record in Spain, meaning there is insufficient data to draw upon with regard to what specific protocol to follow in such circumstances.

After two weeks, with necrosis being identified in the index and middle fingers, plus in part of a third finger, the confirmation came that these needed to be amputated.

Spanish doctors recommended the treatment take place in Wales where the boy originates so he can have support from his family following the procedure.

At present, he is still undergoing treatment to prevent the loss of others, and he is waiting to undergo surgery to have two fingers amputated.

Guillem Pons, professor in the Department of Geography of the University of the Balearic Islands specialised in Biogeography, said that the spider in question is the “most poisonous spider on the Iberian Peninsula”.

He says: "Every year there are cases of bites of this species that get complicated, since it is a relatively common species in the Balearic Islands".

He claims the effects of the venom is similar to that of loxosceles reclusa, which can cause necrosis, ulceration and skin loss.

Professor Pons says he does not remember cases as serious as this, which have ended in amputations, as a lot depends on how the affected person's body reacts to the poison.

He warned if not treated properly, the bites can result in death, but this is extremely rare.
