Elon Musk's remarks are 'absurd', said Mel Stride (Image: GETTY)
Elon Musk’s incendiary remarks about the UK - including incorrect claims about the Falkland Islands - are "absurd and deeply unhelpful", Conservative Party leadership candidate Mel Stride has said.
However, the MP for Central Devon said he would nevertheless continue to use X - the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, which the billionaire entrepreneur rebranded after buying it for £35 billion last year.

Mr Musk has kept up a steady stream of posts about the UK in recent days, sharply criticising, among others, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and former Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf.
After the riots which swept the UK earlier this month, South Africa-born Mr Musk claimed that “civil war was inevitable” - a comment condemned by Justice Minister Heidi Alexander as “deeply irresponsible”.
Shadow work and pension secretary Mel Stride, speaking to Times Radio, agreed.

He said: "Musk's comments about us sending people to the Falklands who had been rioting which was untrue, his comments suggesting that we're on the brink of a civil war in this country is absurd and deeply, deeply unhelpful.
"I have concerns about X generally, in terms of the fairly permissive approach to those that are able to further all sorts of views, including conspiracy theories, etc, on that platform.”
Referring to the widespread public disorder in cities including Liverpool, Sunderland and Stoke, he added: “I do think that one of the takeaways from the very, very unfortunate incidents that have happened in recent days and weeks is that we do need to look afresh at social media in terms of policing content, in terms of consequence for those platform providers that allow some of these ideas to percolate because they do have real-world consequences, as we saw on our streets."
Nevertheless, asked if he would stop using X, Mr Stride said: "Me, personally no, certainly not at the moment.
"I know some fellow colleagues across the House actually have been debating that, and I think some of them might have actually done that.

"In my case, I will stay on the site, but I do think we do need to have a long and careful, measured look at the way in which sites like X are feeding into issues like conspiracy theories, misinformation and violence on our streets.”
Mr Musk's much-awaited interview with former President Donald Trump was marred by technical glitches on Monday, with people unable to join the audio conversation on X's Spaces platform.
Eighteen minutes into a conversation that was supposed to start at 8pm EDT, Musk posted on X that the platform was experiencing a “massive” denial-of-service attack (DDOS), which is a federal criminal act that involves flooding a site with data to overwhelm it and knock it offline.
Outage tracker Downdetector reported a spike in reports of X being inaccessible to users starting before the interview but it could not be immediately verified whether this was due to a malicious attack.
The rest of X appeared to be operating normally, and X users questioned whether there was a DDOS attack or if the Spaces event was just overwhelmed with people trying to listen in.

During their conversation, Mr Musk asked Mr Trump about European Union internal market boss Thierry Breton's letter asking him not to spread disinformation when interviewing the former president on X.
Mr Breton said Mr Musk has a "responsibility" to ensure "all proportionate and effective mitigation measures are put in place regarding the amplification of harmful content in connection with relevant events".
