A tragic high-speed police chase ended with a woman being ejected and killed and her 1-year-old son killed after their car crashed into a semitractor Friday on Interstate-80/94, charges state.

Police pulled the boy’s father, Eric K. White, 21, of Calumet City, Illinois, out of the driver’s seat in a burning black Audi, charges allege. He resisted, trying to hang onto the steering wheel, court documents said.

He said his girlfriend, Britni A. Griffin, 20, of Matteson, Illinois, was ejected from the car. A passerby told police her body was lying 100 yards east.

She was identified as by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The child was identified as Ky’Air Lucas. Griffin and White were his parents, according to court documents.

White was taken to the hospital, then arrested and jailed. He posted his $15,000 bond Monday, records show.

He was charged Saturday with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a level 1 felony, two counts of resisting law enforcement, both level 3 felonies, and misdemeanor carrying a handgun without a license.

White could face from 20 to 40 years on the most serious charge, a level 1 felony. His next court date has not been set.

A Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted him speeding near 25th Avenue and Broadway in Gary 11:30 a.m. Friday, charges state. White made an abrupt U-turn on East 25th Avenue running a red light, documents state. The officer lost track of him.

A second deputy picked up the chase, headed north on Broadway, before White turned around and headed for I-80/94 westbound, charges state.

The Audi wove around a car on the on-ramp, picking up speed, the affidavit states. It continued to weave “recklessly” in-and-out of traffic.

By the next exit, Grant Street, White was still gaining “considerable distance,” driving 100 mph, according to the deputy, charges state.

A third officer, a detective from the Lake County Police High Crimes Unit, joined the chase at Grant Street. The second deputy lost sight of White for 20 to 30 seconds until he saw a large amount of smoke near Colfax Street, documents state.

One officer estimated White was driving 130 mph just before the crash.

The car hit the back of a large, industrial 2018 Kenworth semi-tractor and trailer, spun around and hit a median wall before going back across all lanes and was T-boned by the same semitruck, the affidavit alleges.

When police caught up, the Audi was in the front end of a semitruck, they wrote. The roof was missing and the car “heavily damaged.” White had a large cut on his face.

He initially was not moving, then tried to stop officers from taking him out of the burning car. Police recovered a semi-automatic gun in his left pocket. Police initially didn’t see another passenger in the car. They were told later about the woman. The child was later found “mangled” and “unresponsive” in the back car seat.

Indiana State Police drew White’s blood for a toxicology test.

White was arrested in November for fleeing from police, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez said in a prior release. He also had an active warrant for illegal possession of a handgun, officials said.

Neither record could be found in Indiana online court records.
