Esther McVey: Socialist madness over four day week is catching on
2024-03-03 00:00:00.0     每日快报-政治     原网页

Lib Dem run South Cambridgeshire Council, backed by Labour run Cambridge City Council, is wanting to move to five days pay for four days work.

This Socialist madness is obviously catching on as the PCS Union is now calling for the same for their civil service members.

Fran Heathcote, the PCS Union General Secretary is demanding a ‘significant shortening of the working week’ for the 200,000 civil servants her trade union represents, not to mention longer holidays (35 days annual leave up from 28 days).

Obviously that extra day off a week, every week, 52 weeks of the year, is leaving staff exhausted and in need of another week’s holiday - all paid for by the taxpayer.

Mark my words, the trade unions are calling the shots over Labour. Since 2010 they have funded the Labour Party to the tune of £134m and the Labour leader Keir Starmer has personally accepted £81,000 since Jan 2020.

Labour MPs were out on the picket lines with the train drivers, demanding more money and fewer hours, even though they already get on average £65,000 a year for 35 hours work a week.

Combine this with the workers' rights legislation Labour are planning to bring in, and we’ll be back to the 1970s - industrial strife, a collapse in productivity and being the sick man of Europe.

Oh yeah, Sir Keir whose favourite tune is Ode to Joy, the EU National anthem, would have us back in the EU - through the front or back door - in a heartbeat.

Given its support of strikers and its determination to repeal the anti-strike legislation we introduced, it is not so much the Labour Party as the Withdrawal of Labour Party.

None of this bodes well for small businesses who have already made clear these new workers' rights would close down some of them.

It is also bad news for taxpayers who’d be paying for workers to have a day off each week.

After the economic and financial shock of locking down the economy for the best part of two years during the covid pandemic, the country needs a focus on putting a rocket booster to economic growth.

Turning the country back to the bad old days of union dominance with a weak Labour leader appeasing them is the last thing the country needs. In fact it is something from which we may never recover.
