Darren McGrady reveals the Queen's favourite cakes

Queen Elizabeth II became Queen at the age of just 27 and was the longest-reigning British monarch of all time.

With a team of world-class chefs and access to some of the best foods money can buy, royal chefs shared Her Late Majesty’s favourite foods over the years, as well as what meals she consumed on a regular basis.

The late Queen’s former chef, Darren McGrady, was Her Late Majesty’s personal chef for more than 15 years.

He accompanied her on two royal tours of Australia and also cooked for five American Presidents during their state visits.

The chef worked for other members of the Royal Family including Princess Diana, Prince Harry and Prince William at Kensington Palace.

In his book titled "Eating Royally: Recipes and Remembrances from a Palace Kitchen", the chef shared the late Queen’s dining preferences as well as her favourite meals from when she was alive.

According to the chef, the late Queen ate four meals a day, although they were four small portions.

In a series of YouTube Q&A videos, Mr McGrady claimed the late monarch would consume breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

For breakfast, things were kept pretty simple according to royal biographer, Katie Nicholl. “HRH typically starts with a simple cup of tea and biscuits, followed by a bowl of cereal,” Katie previously explained.

According to Mr McGrady, lunch was healthy and typically consisted of grilled fish with wilted spinach or courgettes.

He also said that the late Queen quite liked grilled chicken with salad too. Afternoon tea, which is composed of sandwiches and scones, was one of Her Late Majesty’s favourite meals.

The royal chef explained the late monarch would have afternoon tea in the late afternoon and would enjoy scones with jam and clotted cream.

He said: “She’d always have afternoon tea wherever she was in the world. We’d flown out to Australia and were on the Royal Yacht. It was five o’clock in the morning but for the Queen, it was five in the afternoon so my first job was making scones.”

Dinner would vary for the late Queen, but the chef previously said meals would include a combination of meat or fish and vegetables.

According to Mr McGrady, she loved a Gaelic steak as well as a fillet steak with a mushroom and whisky sauce.

At the time when Mr McGrady was working for the late Queen, there was a team of 20 chefs in the kitchen.

The head chef would provide Her Late Majesty with a menu twice a week where she would choose her meals depending on what she fancied that week.
