SUNGAI PETANI: A total of 298,746 premises in the state have been provided with access to fibre optic networks under Phase One of the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela).

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin (pic) said as of the first quarter of this year, mobile broadband speed has been increased to 34.65 Megabits per second (Mbps).

"4G mobile broadband coverage in populated areas in Kedah has also been expanded to 97.89%. In Merbok, it recorded 99.82% up to the first quarter of 2022," he told reporters at an Aidilfitri open house here on Saturday (May 28).

Zahidi said the ministry targets to achieve 100% internet access for the people by 2025 under the Jendela plan.

However, he explained this process would take a longer time in certain areas, especially if it is related to land acquisition for the construction of telecommunication towers.

On the National Journalists Day (Hawana) 2022 celebrations which will take place at the Hatten Hotel in Melaka on Sunday (May 29), Zahidi said the event is to recognise the valuable contributions of media practitioners in the country.

He said the ministry, which is responsible for the media industry in Malaysia, plans to propose to the government to provide appropriate assistance or benefits to media practitioners who face hardship or accidents while carrying out their duties. - Bernama
