‘Sky Bridge to nowhere’ sees end in sight

KOTA KINABALU: The multimillion-ringgit Sky Bridge in the city centre which leads to a dead end is expected to be resolved within these six months, said the City Hall.

Mayor Noorliza Awang Alip said the Centre Point Mall had, in an earlier agreement, indicated interest in the construction of the opening while bearing the cost of the structure.

“The agreement states that they will start construction of the entrance within six months of bridge completion,” she said in a statement.

This bridge with a dead end was a source of ridicule among many netizens when it was launched by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor earlier this week.

Many had questioned the basis behind this dead end at the launching ceremony.

Meanwhile, the mall’s management has yet to issue an official statement on this matter.

This RM31.5mil project links the 440m Sky Bridge – equipped with escalators, an elevator for the disabled and 20 kiosks – with Asia City, Api-Api Commercial Centre, Warisan Square and Oceanus Mall among other facilities.

Construction of the bridge started in April 2017, but was halted in between due to financial constraints among other reasons. It was only completed this year and opened to the public officially on Sept 9.
