A 59-mile train journey that takes you through the picturesque hills in India has been named the “best” in the world to travel this year.

The Himalayan Queen, which runs from Kalka to Shimla, has secured the top spot in a survey conducted by travel experts.

Titan Travel Tours analysed Tripadvisor reviews, ticket prices, and rail route stops for the world’s most scenic train routes across the world.

And the charming ‘toy train’ has won all the accolades.

Operating on the Kalka-Shimla Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage route, this scenic journey covers 59 miles (96 km) and takes passengers through 102 tunnels and 82 bridges.

The train was constructed by the British in 1903 to provide better access to Shimla, the summer capital of British India.

It is renowned for its vintage charm and leisurely pace, making it a favourite among travellers who appreciate heritage rail journeys.

One of the passengers who had been on the train ride wrote on the TripAdvisor forum: “What an excellent experience! The scenery, although obscured to some degree by trees, is fabulous. There is a benefit to sitting on the right-hand side of the train (facing the direction of travel towards Shimla) as the views from that side are better for most of the journey.

“We had one stop at the halfway point where we could get off the train and stretch our legs for 10 minutes. Refreshments were available for purchase there, too.

“The whole journey took five hours, passing through over 100 tunnels. The only thing I would say is that the toilet looked pretty uninviting and therefore I didn't use it! Other than that, it was a great trip.”

One of the most famous features is the Barog Tunnel, one of the longest on the route, with a fascinating historical story tied to its construction. The other stops along the ride includes Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, and the final destination, Shimla.

The cost of the journey is £2 for standard travel and £4 for premium, the travel experts from Titan Tour Travels stated.

After completing the train ride, passengers can also spend some time in Shimla, known for its colonial architecture, scenic beauty, and vibrant culture.

A second traveller wrote on the forum: "We were worried we wouldn't make it to the station on time due to the horrendous traffic in Shimla.

“The carriages are basic and do not afford you the luxury of being able to traverse the rest of the train, but then that just adds to it's charm.

“The whole journey is breathtaking with over 100 tunnels and nearly 1000 bridges along it's scenic route in the foothills of the Himalayas.

“Every other stop someone will get on to sell some sort of tasty snack and the train travels so slowly you can get that iconic picture standing in the doorway.

“We did not travel the full route although we did spend over two hours on board, a truly memorable experience.”
