Sir Keir Starmer’s efforts to forge closer defence and security ties with the European Union risks undermining NATO, Nigel Farage has warned.
On Thursday the PM signalled he was open to a new security treaty with Brussels during a summit with major European leaders at Blenheim Palace.

But Farage said Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for President who is currently polling ahead of incumbent Joe Biden, could turn his back on NATO if it were to be undermined by an EU rival.
“Anything that takes us closer to a European Defence Union is a massive strategic mistake," Farage told The Sun's Never Mind the Ballots politics show.
“If you want America to walk away, get close to the European Union. You cannot have two military command centres based in Brussels.”

“No man can serve two masters so I would warn Starmer that we need to be very, very careful indeed," he added.
Labour says it wants the pact with the EU to be more than just a conventional defense partnership and include areas such as energy, pandemics, supply chains, and migration.
European leaders have voiced enthusiasm for defense cooperation in parallel to NATO amid the prospect of Donald Trump’s potentially returning to the White House.
It's hoped the pact would strengthen European security should the former President be re-elected and carry out threats to withdraw the US from Nato.
It comes as Sir Keir called for a reset of relations with European allies under his new Labour government, vowing his commitment to NATO was “unshakeable” and that he was also determined to develop closer ties with Washington.

Starmer rang Trump last week following the shocking assassination attempt at one of the Republican's campaign rallies, and revealed they had discussed the “special relationship” between their two nations.
“That is what I mean about maturity and leadership, not just within Europe but more widely and, of course, with the US,” Starmer said.
Sir Keir Starmer told attendees at the event, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz that the UK will be “very much part of Europe” under a Labour government, after years of Brexit-related tensions.
Adressing European leaders in attendance, he said: “Britain will be a friend and a partner, ready to work with you. Not part of the European Union but very much part of Europe.”
Sir Keir told the summit that his Government wanted to “work with all of you to reset relationships”.
He said that task was urgent because “our security is on the line”.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, was sitting beside next Sir Keir at the event. Sir Keir told him that the UK will support Ukraine “for as long as it takes”.
He said the threat posed by Russia “reaches right across Europe”.

The Prime Minister warned attendees that a “new storm” was gathering over the continent amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine which began in February 2022.
Welcoming his counterparts at the summit in Oxfordshire he added: “It [Blenheim Palace] is of course the birth place of Winston Churchill and we stand for the values that he embodied around the world: liberty and democracy, yes of course, but also defiance and resolve in their defence.
“And today as a new storm gathers over our continent we choose to meet it in that same spirit and we choose to meet it together.”
