KUCHING: Sarawak aims to improve the level of scientific literacy among its people once the proposed Sarawak Science Centre (SSC) is completed in 2024.

State Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah said his ministry was working with the Singapore Science Centre to develop the RM200mil centre in Jalan Stadium here.

“The new Sarawak Science Centre will play an instrumental role in providing an informal learning platform.

“It will provide students and the public with immersive, interactive fun exhibits, where learning takes place by carrying out science explorations and physical activities,” he said after opening a workshop for phases four and five of the SSC master plan here yesterday.

Phase four covers exhibition content while phase five is on education learning.

Sagah said the SSC was in line with the ministry’s initiative to encourage scientific literacy among the public by 2030.

“We want a society that understands and accepts science and its application in their daily lives.

“To create a science culture, informal learning platforms such as a science centre must exist,” he said.

Sagah also said the workshop explored ways to develop impactful visitor experiences and informal learning programmes at the new science centre.

It was also a platform for sharing best practices on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) exhibitions.

Participants included stakeholders from various government agencies and departments.
