Security experts from the technology industry, law enforcement and academia will outline what is needed to better measure and understand the effect of computer-based crime in the United States during a public forum Sept. 25 in Silicon Valley.
The event, sponsored by the RAND Corporation and titled “Understanding the Impact of Cyber Crime on U.S. Businesses,” will be from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. Speakers will be Douglas Merrill, chief information officer and vice president of engineering at Google; David Thompson, chief information officer for Symantec Corp.; Scott O'Neal, deputy assistant director, FBI Cyber Division; and Lois Davis, RAND senior policy researcher.
Last year, RAND researchers conducted the first national survey to measure the impact of cyber crimes on American businesses. The first set of results from the survey, sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, are expected to be released soon.
RAND is exploring future research initiatives that may help define the extent of cyber crime and raise recognition of the issue nationally.
Reservations are required for admission to the event. For more details or to RSVP, please visit: http://www.rand.org/events/2007/09/25/email_invitation.html.
