The trucker, called Dom, told Puma Watch North Wales that he spotted the wild beast crossing the slip road behind Costco store near Ellesmere Port at around 2am on April 5. He described seeing a "speckled brown" cat about the size of a fox but with "very large legs and paws and a long bushy tail.” The incident is just the latest in a number of sightings in the region over the past year.

Eyewitnesses have reported seeing big cats prowling around at Ince Marshes, Whitby Park and in Chester.

An Uber Eats courier claimed to have come across a big cat that resembled a puma on Chester Meadows last December.

He told Puma Watch: "I was out on my bike coming back into town after delivering someone’s McDonald’s when I spotted an enormous big cat across the river on the meadows.

"I pulled over to take a picture and tried to shout to a dog walker nearby but they couldn’t hear me.

“It was prowling along the edge of the long grass then disappeared into the undergrowth.

"It was absolutely massive though, like nothing I’ve ever seen.”

Suspected sightings of big cats around the UK are being reported with increasing frequency and include leopards, panthers, jaguars and jungle cats.

Dr Andrew Hemmings, a wildlife expert from the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, believes there could be hundreds of large cats in the wild.

He told The Sun that there could be as many as 250 black leopards and 250 pumas in rural areas of the UK.

The "big cats" are believed to have either been set free from illegal collections or to have escaped from zoos.

The UK only has one native species of cat: the Scottish wildcat.

It is about the same size as a domestic cat and lives in tiny, dwindling numbers, exclusively in the Scottish Highlands.
