No one was injured in a shooting that shut down all lanes of the outbound Edens Expressway for about an hour early Wednesday.

The shooting was the 165th reported on Chicago and Cook County area highways so far this year, according to Haylie Polistina, a trooper with the Illinois State Police.

Troopers were called to a gas station along Interstate 94 near Peterson Avenue, north of the LeBagh Woods Forest Preserve, in the South Edgebrook neighborhood of Chicago around 5:30 a.m. for a report of a shooting, Polistina said in an email. No injuries were reported.

As they investigated, northbound lanes of the Edens were closed at 7:15 a.m., officials said. They were reopened about an hour later, but the temporary closure resulted in serious delays for travelers. Traffic monitors said vehicles were at a standstill back to Montrose Avenue, near where Interstate 94 splits from Interstate 90 in Mayfair, a couple of miles away.

It was the fourth shooting reported on the Edens Expressway so far this year, according to statistics maintained by state police.

While there has been an increase in the number of expressway shootings each year for at least the past three years, the 165 shootings in Cook County so far in 2021 has eclipsed the total for all of 2020 and represents an increase of more than 24% over the whole of last year.

There were 52 expressway shootings in 2019 and 43 in 2018.

The Aug. 17 fatal shooting of Denise Huguelet, a 67-year-old retired special education teacher from Orland Park brought renewed attention to the ongoing problem. Two people were detained after the shooting and a gun was located, but no charges were brought forward and state police continue to investigate.

Huguelet was killed the week before state police unveiled a $12.5 million investment in high-speed, license plate-reading cameras that are going up along area roadways. It was part of the Tamara Clayton Expressways Act, championed by Alma Hill and named for Hill’s sister, who was killed in 2019 on Interstate 57 — where there were two shootings Tuesday morning alone.
