A 27-year-old man was fatally shot early Thursday in the Edgewood neighborhood of Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

       The shooting occurred just after midnight in the 600 block of Edgewood Street NE, about three weeks from Rhode Island Avenue.

       Police said officers responding to a call about a shooting found the man, Eric Cooper, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Cooper, whose address was not provided, died at a hospital.

       No other details about the shooting were released.

       There have been 184 homicides in the District this year, up 14 percent from this time in 2020.
