The Prince of Wales is the current holder of the Duke of Edinburgh title following the death of Prince Philip in April. However, it is understood the Queen and Philip were keen on passing the title onto Prince Edward.

       In an interview with the BBC, Prince Edward said: “It was fine in theory, ages ago when it was sort of a pipe dream of my father’s.

       “Of course it will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales, when he becomes king, whether he’ll do that, so we’ll wait and see.”

       But new reports suggest Prince Charles does not wish to bestow the title upon his younger brother.

       A source close to Prince Charles told the Daily Mail: “The Prince is the Duke of Edinburgh as it stands, and it is up to him what happens to the title. It will not go to Edward.”

       Now a source claims Earl and Countess of Wessex's daughter, Lady Louise, may choose to style herself as Her Royal Highness Princess Louise in a bid to “use the titles their family already have”.

       The young royal will be legally allowed to use her princess title when she turns 18 in November.

       A source told the Daily Mail: "If Charles is going to play silly games over titles, Edward and Sophie might need to ensure that they use the titles their family already have.

       "Louise is a humble teenager and doesn't act like a princess, but she is one - that's a fact."

       At the time of their marriage, Edward and Sophie said their future children would not use the HRH style.
