KUALA LUMPUR: Discussions with the Attorney General Chambers (AGC) shows they have begun to initiate reforms, including the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) said that Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun had given his commitment to assist the government and Parliament in the matter.

"In order for these transformations to take place, some laws need to be amended and as such, assistance and advice from the AGC on this matter is vital," Wan Junaidi said in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 15).

He said Idrus's assurance came after a meeting on Wednesday (Sept 15) where both men discussed several areas with regard to the proposed reforms.

Among the issues discussed, he said, were on the appointment of an additional Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker, from two to three.

"Also discussed were the implementation of Undi18 and looking into the rights of people in Sabah and Sarawak as stated in the Malaysia Agreement (MA63)," he added.

Wan Junaidi said that carrying the reforms was not an easy task as it would involve amendments to existing laws including the Federal Constitution.

"It also requires support from all quarters and for this, sufficient engagement will be undertaken. However, it needs to start somewhere," he added.

Wan Junaidi said that carrying out the proposed reforms would be among his top priority during his first 100 days in office.

On Monday (Sept 13), the government and opposition leaders signed a historic memorandum of understanding (MoU), paving the way for a bipartisan and consensus approach in bringing stability and reform for the nation.

The MoU covers six focuses, namely empowering the Covid-19 plan, administrative transformation, rejuvenation of Parliament, independence of judicial institutions, MA63 and the setting up of a steering committee.

Several of the proposed reforms are to be implemented immediately while others would be implemented in stages next year.
