KUALA LUMPUR: Police here fired four shots into the tyres of a car to stop a robbery suspect but he still managed to escape by driving against the flow of traffic.
Undeterred, police launched a manhunt and gathered information before finally arresting the suspect on Sunday (Aug 29) in Taman Sentosa, Klang.
Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Idzam Jaafar said the suspect had robbed a victim near the Sri Rakyat apartment in Bukit Jalil on Aug 28 at around 6.30pm.
"The suspect has identified himself as a policeman and carried out a check on a foreigner. He then took RM150 from the victim before fleeing. However, a patrol unit spotted the act and a car chase ensued,” said ACP Muhammad Idzam.
"In his haste to escape, several vehicles in the area were hit by the suspect's car," he added in a statement on Monday (Aug 30).
ACP Muhammad Idzam said the chase led the police to Jalil Link where the suspect's car was blocked at a traffic light junction.
"Despite instructions for him to alight from his car, the suspect drove towards the police. Four gunshots were fired at the car's tyres to stop him. However, the suspect managed to escape by driving against traffic towards Shah Alam," he said.
ACP Muhammad Idzam said a manhunt was launched and after much information gathering, the suspect was finally arrested the following day.
He said an urine test came back positive for methamphetamine.
"Background checks also showed he has criminal and drug-related records," he said, adding that the suspect have been remanded to assist in investigations.
