PETALING JAYA: Public health experts share the view of Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah that many places are reopening now despite it not being safe to do so.
They said the Health director-general’s advice should be heeded by all, including those fully vaccinated, and everyone should continue observing Covid-19 standard operating procedures rigorously.
Universiti Malaya virologist Prof Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar has warned that vaccination only protects recipients and not others.
“More than 60% of the Malaysian population are still not fully vaccinated, making them potential targets for the severe forms of Covid-19.
“Our Health DG’s reminder is to be heeded by all.
“Even those fully vaccinated can be re-infected and transmit the virus,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Dr Sazaly also agreed that the fully vaccinated must be wary and exercise their “privilege” with caution, without abusing it and endangering others.
He also expressed concern about employers not readying workplaces to receive employees once all sectors are allowed to fully open.
Factors such as ventilation, space to allow physical distancing, and others are important amid the pandemic to ensure a safe workplace for all, he said, adding that employers need to be fully aware and sensible before telling all workers to return to the office.
Independent health policy specialist Dr Khor Swee Kheng said the announcement of dining-in privileges for fully-vaccinated individuals in all states is premature for several reasons.
“One, not all restaurant workers are vaccinated.
“Two, many states are still experiencing high cases and significant community transmission,” he added.
Dr Khor also said that any major government decision should be announced by the new Prime Minister and Cabinet once they have had a chance to review progress and policies.
On Thursday night, Dr Noor Hisham reminded Malaysians that permission for many places to reopen does not imply the coast is clear.
“A reminder to all, many places are opening because of the economy, and not because it is safe.
“Please keep that in mind,” he said, adding that people should always wear a mask, and in fact, double mask if possible.
He also reiterated the importance of physical distancing and frequent hand washing.
“Avoid crowded and confined spaces.
“Stay safe and get vaccinated as soon as possible,” he added.
