Donald Trump has returned to New York City to take part in the E Jean Carroll defamation trial, brought against him by the former Elle magazine columnist who accused him of sexually assaulting her in a department store dressing room in the 1990s, for which the candidate was found liable last year.

The trip marks an emphatic slump back to earth for the Republican after he was named the overwhelming winner of the Iowa caucuses on Monday night.

Mr Trump notched up more than 51 per cent of the vote in the Midwest while his Republican challengers Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley followed way behind in second and third place with 21 per cent and 19 per cent respectively.

Vivek Ramaswamy scored just 8 per cent and has since suspended his campaign and endorsed the winner.

Speaking after his decisive victory, the former president hailed “a very special night” and pledged that he would “straighten up the problems of the world” if he returned to the White House.

Only after his latest trial appearance can the GOP presidential nominee-presumptive turn his attention towards campaigning in New Hampshire ahead of that state’s all-important primary next week.

Crowley continues by saying that as Mr Trump spoke from the White House, many of his followers believed him, amplified his defamatory comments on social media and bombarded Ms Carroll with threatening tweets leaving her living in fear.

Her professional reputation was ruined and she went from being viewed as a respected columnist to being seen as a political operative.

In October 2022, Mr Trump again said her story was a hoax and she sued him again including her allegation of sexual assault leading to the two-week trial last spring. After the jury found in her favour, Mr Trump went on TV and called her a liar and a wack job, and he keeps doing it, even as recently as this morning.

41 minutes ago Opening statements: Plaintiff E Jean Carroll

Giving the opening statement on behalf of plaintiff E Jean Carroll is Shawn Crowley of Kaplan, Hecker & Fink.

He tells the jury that in the Spring of 1996, Donald Trump sexually assaulted E Jean Carroll and that that is a proven fact as decided by a jury.

She came forward in June 2019 with the allegation in her book. Mr Trump said he never met her, and that she just made it up to make money.

As president, he used the world's biggest microphone against Ms Carroll and he lied — that has already been decided.

Crowley explains that they are here to decide whether Mr Trump's defamatory statements caused Ms Carroll harm. And if so, how much should he pay?

He explains that the then-president unleashed his followers on her and she received threatening messages online from his followers.

Crowley asks how much money it will take to make him stop his lies as he didn’t stop in 2019, doing it again in 2022 and even today he continues to defame Ms Carroll.

51 minutes ago Court resumes with Judge Kaplan instructing jurors on their role

A jury of nine has been seated in the New York defamation trial of Donald Trump brought against him by E Jean Carroll.

The former president is not present in court as we await opening statements.

Judge Kaplan explains to the jury that the plaintiff has the burden to make the scales tip — but this is not proof beyond a reasonable doubt, put that out of your mind. A magazine published an excerpt including Ms Carroll's account of being sexually assaulted by Mr Trump in Bergdorf's department store.

Mr Trump denied knowing Ms Carroll, Judge Kaplan continues. He said that she made up the story for an improper purpose.

There has been a prior jury decision, some of which is binding on this trial — that Mr Trump did in fact sexually abuse Ms Carroll.

Therefore, Mr Trump’s false statements were defamatory, says the judge. He tells the jury that their role is to decide if the former president should pay punitive damages.

1 hour ago ICYMI: Ramaswamy suspends campaign after coming fourth in Iowa

Vivek Ramaswamy is ending his presidential campaign after finishing fourth in the Iowa Caucuses.

The 38-year-old biotech entrepreneur and anti-woke author endorsed Donald Trump after the former president’s overwhelming victory in the first contest in the Republican presidential primary.

“We did not achieve the surprise that we wanted to deliver tonight ... as of this moment we are going to suspend this presidential campaign,” he told his supporters in the Hawkeye State on Monday night.

“There’s no path for me to be the next president absent things that we don’t want to see happen in this country,” he added.

1 hour ago Analysis: Trump’s election lies are thriving. His GOP rivals aren’t challenging them

Donald Trump’s supporters continue to adopt his bogus narrative that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, with nearly 70 per cent of his Iowa caucus voters falsely believing President Joe Biden was illegitimately elected.

Asked whether they believed President Biden was legitimately elected to the presidency in 2020, more than two-thirds of Iowa caucus goers said no, according to entrance polls from last night’s caucuses.

That includes 69 per cent of Iowa caucus goers who supported Mr Trump. Only 11 per cent of his supporters in Iowa believe the president was legitimately elected.

Mr Trump has relied on conspiracy theories and a fake narrative that the 2020 election was rigged against him to cast doubt on the legitimacy of elections he lost. Those false claims have since animated Republican campaigns for public offices across the country and GOP-drafted legislation in nearly every state to change how elections are run.

The false claims surrounding the 2020 election and the electoral process fuelled violence at the US Capitol on January 6, and the former president is facing criminal charges in Washington DC and in Georgia for his spurious attempts to overturn election results culminating in a mob that stormed the halls of Congress to do it by force.

1 hour ago The scene in court

Jury selection is done and opening arguments will begin soon at 3pm.

Donald Trump and E Jean Carroll did not make eye contact the entire time, though at several points they did seem to look in each other’s direction.

Each time Judge Kaplan told the potential jurors the facts: Trump sexually assaulted Carroll and he defamed her, he would shake his head

Judge Kaplan is not messing around today — he got short with Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, and reiterated to her that her repeatedly asking for things wouldn’t change his mind

Trump spent most of the jury selection just facing forward with a blank stare. It’s hard to ignore how tired he must be, given his speech in Iowa was only late last night. This is just a precursor to how ridiculous his schedule will be this year.

Carroll, wearing a white blazer and belt cinched at the waist, remains poised on the edge of her seat with her hands folded in her lap. She looks around at the jury often.

The potential jurors were asked if they vote, what news outlets they read and more. A majority said they voted in the last two elections and many named The New York Times or cable television as their choice of news outlets.

2 hours ago Haley’s surge chilled by third place in frozen Iowa caucus

The former governor of South Carolina charged into Iowa as 2024 kicked off with the hopes of knocking off Ron DeSantis and snatching a second-place finish, buoyed by a late-game polling surge.

Instead, she ended the night in a close third — all the while declaring that, despite Mr DeSantis pulling off his own sort-of victory, that it was now a “two-person race”.

She now heads to New Hampshire, boosted by her rising poll numbers but with her momentum blunted, at least to some degree, by the lack of a result here tonight.
