Insulate Britain, which is demanding Government action on home insulation, stopped traffic at two sections of the M25. They targeted Junction 23 for South Mimms in Hertfordshire and the main carriageway from Junction 8 at Reigate to Junction 9 at Leatherhead, both in Surrey. Demonstrators sat on the road, causing huge queues of traffic.

       Speaking to LBC, NHS worker Jay said: "I've done a night shift, I'm tired. I'm not happy with the situation."

       Pharmacist Graham Weidle added: "I'm due to open a pharmacy and it won't open.

       "I think they're going the wrong way about it.

       "They're doing this for effect but not for sympathy.

       "We all support climate change, we all support sustainability and a more regenerative way of life but this doesn't help.

       "Every car here has their engines on and that's got to be tens of thousands of cars.

       "They're working against themselves, I don't believe they have any support."

       Videos posted on social media show angry drivers remonstrating with the activists.

       Insulate Britain said 89 of its members took part in the action on Wednesday.

       It said in a statement: "We demand credible action now.

       "Proper jobs for hundreds of thousands of people to start the first real step - to insulate all the homes of this country - which pound for pound gives us the biggest reduction in carbon emissions.

       "It is a total no-brainer and yet this Government refuses to get on with the job. This is criminal negligence."

       Following Monday's protests, One supporter, Liam Norton, a 36-year-old electrician from London, said he is "shocked at the lack of significant action from our Government".

       He went on: "It's a no-brainer. Insulating Britain will reduce emissions, provide hundreds of thousands of jobs and stop our elderly from dying in cold homes each winter. So stop messing about, Boris, and get on with the job.

       "As soon as a statement is made that we can trust and is meaningful, we will get off the roads."

       Another activist, Zoe Cohen, 51, from Warrington, Cheshire, said: "Boris needs to stop making things worse - with all their road building, airport expansion, HS2 white elephant and new oil fields - and get on with the obvious stuff like insulating the 29 million homes that need to come off fossil fuels.

       "We can't get to net-zero if they don't take responsibility for this. Only the Government can make this happen."
